International Men’s Day: More Than Just a Date

Today, November 19, is International Men’s Day—a day often downplayed across the globe and in the same breathe misunderstood.

International Men’s Day (IMD) isn’t just a random date cooked up by guys who felt left out. Celebrated in over 80 countries, this is a day when we pause to reflect on what it means to be a man, celebrate the guys who get it right, and talk about some of the challenges men face—from mental health to societal expectations.

The day's history is actually super heartwarming.

It started back in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago (shoutout to Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, the guy who made it happen).

The doctor, picked the date to honour his dad’s birthday and celebrate men who he viewed as positive role models. Since then, the day has grown and is celebrated annually in tens of nations.

With this year's theme being “Embracing Positive Masculinity”, a concept that challenges the age-old stereotypes of manliness: the days of “men don’t cry” are long gone (at least, we hope so). Today, masculinity is being redefined by a new set of values that go beyond physical strength or financial prowess.
